Components of a remote energy metering system

The correct design and installation of communication infrastructure in remote meter reading systems is crucial for the reliability of data transmission. The basic physical components include antennas, GSM splitters, coaxial cables and antenna connectors. Each of these plays a vital role in ensuring a stable connection to the mobile network operator’s network.
Antennas
A key component of a radio system. Its function is to receive and transmit electromagnetic waves within the operating band of the equipment – most commonly 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz.
TRANS-DATA 5G DZ5 antenna (617~960, 1695~2700, 3300-7200 MHz)
TRANS-DATA 5G DZ5 A741011
4G/3G/GSM Antenna: TRANS-DATA LTE KYZ 7.5/8/10
TRANS-DATA LTE KYZ 7.5/8/10 A741031
GSM antenna: ATK 20/800-980 MHz (20-element)
GSM ATK-20/800–980 MHz A7025
Splitters and branch lines
GSM splitters and branch units act as intermediary devices between the meters and the mobile network. The GSM modules from the meters are connected to the GSM splitters, which are connected to an external antenna.
GSM/DCS/3G/LTE/5G eight-way splitter 670 - 3800 MHz
TRANS-DATA 670-3800 MH A6818 8-port GSM/DCS/3G/LTE/5G splitter
GSM/DSC/UMTS/LTE Tap: TRANS-DATA TAP-5 (2.2/5 dB)
TRANS-DATA GSM/DSC/UMTS/LTE 2.2/5 dB splitter
Cables
The choice of cable depends on:
  • the length of the line (the longer it is, the greater the signal attenuation)
  • the operating frequency (higher frequency bands require a better
  • quality shield)
  • environmental conditions (UV, humidity, temperature)
It is recommended to use 50 Ω cables with high-quality shieldingand as short a length as possible to avoid signal loss.

Tri-Lan 400 WLL PE Fca 2.7/7.2/10.3 50 Ohm coaxial cable [1 m]
Connectors
They provide a mechanical connection between a coaxial cable and a device or an aerial. In GSM systems, the following types of connectors are most commonly used:
SMA connector crimped on H-155 cable, gold plated
Gold-plated SMA plug for H-155 cable, E84554
N-plug for Tri-Lan 240/H-155 cable (6 GHz)

Hybrid optical fibre capable of transmitting data and power

A – Cu 2 × 0.52 mm² B – G.657.A2 fibre
C – insulation D – coloured marker
The GDJXJH-1B6a2+2*0.52mm² optical fibre cable is based on the 3 x 2 mm flat cable design, which is popular in Poland. This type of cable is used in the majority of multi-family residential buildings. Due to its low price and mechanical strength, it is also a common choice for LAN connections within buildings.

The solution presented by DIPOL involves modifying the popular design by replacing the FRP or steel rods with a copper strand. As a result, the cable retains its transmission capabilities whilst also offering the ability to supply power to low-current devices. This type of cable will be suitable for use wherever data transmission between devices exceeds the capabilities of twisted-pair cable or other copper-based media.

Alongside the cable, adaptors will be presented that enable the power supplied via the cable to be connected to devices, as well as mechanical connectors and adaptors for terminating and extending the optical path based on this type of cabling.

Signal Fire AI-12 – our latest welding machine

The Signal Fire AI-12 is a model from the range of fibre-optic fusion splicers, representing a further development of the technology used for years in previous-generation models. It combines an affordable price with advanced fibre-optic positioning and splicing technology. Both novice users and advanced, experienced installers will appreciate the ease of use of this device. The quality and reliability of the splicer have been confirmed in a series of tests carried out under various environmental conditions and on different types of fibre.

The most significant change compared to previous models is the significantly greater fibre positioning accuracy of 0.05 μm. This is made possible by higher-resolution cameras and advanced image analysis algorithms. Improved fibre positioning results in even lower attenuation in the resulting splices, which places the AI-12 model amongst the splicers that can be used both for subscriber connections and for connections on fibre-optic trunk lines.
