CeBIT 2008 - was the new concept a success?
This year's CeBIT in Hanover - the world's largest trade fair for IT and telecommunications - took place between 4th and 9th of March 2008.
There were about 5900 companies (by 5 percent less than last year). For the first time in the history of the fair, China had the largest representation, surpassing in numbers the previous leader, Taiwan.
Among the notable absentees were Sony, Sharp, Philips, Lenovo, Dell and Nokia.
After several years of decrease of the number of exhibitors, the organizers decided to increase the number of conferences - to attract professionals, and shorten the event by one day - to cut the costs of exhibitors. But probably the main focus was to define the objectives of the exhibition.
Unfortunately the organization efforts didn't seem to refresh the event. They couldn't eliminate the feeling of deficiency, a want for new technologies and for an impulse to stop the decrease of investments in European telecommunications.
During the trade fair we could see a steady factor in European industry - expansion of red tape. The organizers, using subsidizing, invite national exhibitors that, instead of products, are showing travel brochures, and grassroots movements - promoting projects like Green IT.
In this situation the most interesting trends seen at the fair were network and mobile solutions for television - as an extension of offers of telecommunication operators. The solutions are based on technologies that improve data transfers, especially those of mobile telephony. The example is LTE technology presented by Sony Ericsson and T-Mobile.

LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the newest transmission system for mobile applications, developed according to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). The specification accepted in January, 2008, adopts theoretical limit of 326 Mbps (practical transmission speed about 100 Mbps).
CeBIT is always interesting for many people. This year there were about 400,000 visitors.
There were many conferences and lectures that attracted the public.
The products awarded for aesthetics (International Forum Design): Access Point - Level One, computer of Sony, CCTV camera of Panasonic.
Big can also be beautiful - this product has also been awarded by International Forum Design.
An indisputable leader in display technologies - once again Samsung - Large Format Display (LFD).
31-inch OLED television, so far the largest TV set made in this technology. AMOLED (Active Matrix OLED) displays, in the first place may replace LCD screens in mobile phones and still/video cameras.
SVC (Scalable Video Coding) codec presented by famous Fraunhofer Institute, as an extension of H.264/AVC allows to decode TV stream to different resolutions (e.g. HD or SDTV).
CMOS image sensor developed by Samsung achieves much better parameters than similar products in the market.
Thanks to special shape and small size of pixels (5.0 um), its resolution and sensitivity is unequaled. The sensor has been employed in GX-20 camera (14.6 Mega Pixel), a strong candidate for the market winner.
LFD (Large Format Display) technology may shortly dominate advertising market. The displays, operating in the Web, equipped with touch screens enable the watchers to choose what they want, providing interactive commercials (the user can select any image available in the menu).
Some exhibitors arranged a true home environment, to show their equipment in real-life conditions. One of them hired ... a sleeping man. Yet, many visitors were more interested whether the man slept or not, than in the shown devices.
RFID technology is used in logistics and storage management - to track the flow of goods and their current position. In special RFID tags there can be, for example, personal data allowing to identify people from a distance. Active tag (equipped with a battery), installed in a car license plate, allows to read remotely the data of the owner and the car, from up to 500m away.
A price breakthrough and new functionality of subnotebooks - Asus Eee PC. For about 300 USD the end user gets renown brand-name notebook with Linux system (Windows XP compatible).
SSD (Solid State Disk) based on flash memory, presented by Samsung (on the right). Big advantages: shorter access time, much lower power consumption, high mechanical reliability. The disk is equipped with SATA II interface.
Industry computers are tested in most tough environments, e.g. in streams of oil.
An avid interest was shown by the visitors in devices for creating backbone networks in unlicensed band, presented also by Polish company Osbridge. All big manufacturers still test demand for "n" devices, not so popular yet. A wide range of the devices were presented by TP-link.
Monitored access is required in many places. We saw a crop of CCTV cameras based on IP technology, which supported by advanced software (e.g. for face identification) and biometric fingerprint readers are really effective barriers to intruders.
Multimedia (TV, radio, computer games) and Internet telephony is offered by many companies. For easy configuration of home networks, Linksys has prepared LELA (Linksys EasyLink Advisor) - free software package. Such installation enables the user to connect e.g. the Internet radio seen in the picture.
Field tests of quad vehicles and then ... you can test quad processors from AMD - maybe it was the idea of the track under the auspices of the company.Another interesting object was "intelligent" Volkswagen car, capable of automatic driving thanks to appropriate software and a variety of sensors - in an area like at a driving school designed for learners to practice maneuvers.
Green IT - the catchword of this year's fair. Solar batteries attached to the backpacks, used for supplying power to mobile devices, are not so big contribution in environment protection. Another form of protection is "non-toxic designing" propagated by Greenpeace.

Young people with laptops and mobile phones sitting on the grass were very characteristic for the event.
Among the visitors there were much more men than women. Just opposite the the posters
