At this year's CeBIT it was difficult to find European producers of telecommunications devices. Now, the major league form Asian and American corporations and the player that, though also comes from Asia, may be considered as a sole similar innovation power - Korean Samsung. In the field of wireless technologies there were also seen some Israeli firms. At the same time Philips loses its leading innovation position, and mobile solutions from Nokia and Ericsson are getting behind those presented by Samsung and Alcatel.
It is the result of great demand for new technologies on Asian and American markets. Korean producers, having implemented new solutions on their own market, successfully install them in Europe (WiBRO, DMB). American companies take advantage of big and homogeneous national market, and dominate WiMAX business, whereas European governments lobbied by cellular operators are reluctant to giving concessions for their competitors who want to build WiMAX backbones.
As European broadcasters of HDTV are just starting up, promotion of new devices is done in Asia and America (PS3 console, Xbox 360, HD DVD and Blu-ray players). Simply Europeans have too few HDTV sets as yet.
The monopolies that dominated European small national telecommunications markets until recently, omnipresent red tape and necessity of getting numerous concessions, licenses and permissions - plus governments' susceptibility to lobbing, low innovation level and generally high costs of production - all the factors cause collapse of European telecommunications.
